The Hybrid Alurans are a genetically engineered species, originally developed by the cetacean Imperial Alurans as ambassadors and diplomats and to act as liaisons between the Federation and themselves. As a purpose-tailored species, the Hybrid Alurans are capable of living both above and under water, and are capable of indefinite respiration in either environment.

However, after the Scourge War devastated the Federation's military and economic power, the totalitarian Aluran Empire abandoned all pretense of diplomacy and instead invaded and conquered their surrounding systems while the Federation was incapable of retaliating.

Slated for destruction, a small number of the original Hybrid Alurans managed to escape from the Aluran Empire to the Federation, bringing with them the exotic biochemical reactors, living starships, and anti-gravity technology that formed the core technologies of the Aluran Empire. Swearing vengeance against their creators, the few Hybrid Alurans left wage a vicious guerrilla war against the powerful Aluran Empire.

Hybrid Alurans are long and graceful, with males measuring 2.8 to 3.3 meters from head to tail, and females 2.4 to 3.0 meters. Utilizing precisely crafted environment suits, Alurans are capable of generating delicate gravity fields around them that essentially allow them to swim through air as if it were water.

Leowa is one of the few Hybrid Alurans who retain their original purpose of acting as diplomats to the Federation, whose tenuous support allows them to continue their operations. With a galaxy that despises and distrusts the Hybrid Alurans as former slaves of the Aluran Empire, many fear that the freed Hybrids are merely sleeper agents awaiting the perfect time to turn against the Federation, and as such the Hybrids can find few allies in their struggle against the Imperial Alurans.
